VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

September 2002
As the school year begins, Cambridge School Volunteers, Inc. (CSV), is again seeking volunteers to work in the Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) from kindergarten through grade 12. Founded in 1966, CSV is the private, non-profit agency that recruits, trains, places and provides support services for volunteers in CPS. CSV's volunteers, serving as individual tutors, classroom aides, library assistants, mentors, speakers, and special project leaders, have helped thousands of Cambridge students with basic subjects like language arts, math, science, and ESL; as well as with art, music, computer education and enrichment activities.

In addition, to the CSV's Tutoring Center at the high school, CSV's Intergenerational Literacy Program, and the Intergenerational Math Program, CSV manages and staffs special programs for the Cambridge School Department, such as the citywide Elementary School After-School Learning Center Program. Tutors, especially in math and science, are always needed. Students in the Cambridge Schools speak over 40 languages and come from over 75 countries.

Teaching experience is not required to volunteer. CSV asks for a "minimal" commitment of 1.5 to 2 hours per week during the school year. Tutor one-on-one once or twice a week during the school year and participate in a remarkable learning opportunity. Help strengthen our future by calling Cambridge School Volunteers at (617) 349-6794 or e-mailing: CSV@cps.ci.cambridge.ma.us for information or see our web site at www.csvinc.org

Cambridge School Volunteers seeking a business or university to participate in a new Reading Buddies program at a Cambridge elementary school. The school has received a three-year grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education to cover the costs of the program, including books, training, and supervision. Approximately 20 volunteers are needed to partner with 20 second graders.

Reading Buddies programs address Cambridge's strong commitment to early literacy by pairing adult volunteers with first, second or third graders to read aloud and share conversation for 30 minutes bi-weekly, usually during the adult's lunch hour. Volunteers learn how reading aloud can promote literacy in a training session led by CPS teachers and CSV staff. At a year-end celebration for students and volunteers, each student receives a book to take home chosen by his or her buddy.
